Another great race! The weather at Pimlico wasn’t bright and sunny but at least the rain held off and the track was clean. The pre-race was a little too much the filly vs the boys heavy for my tastes, but that’s the media for ya. The bottom line is a great horse is a great horse filly or colt and this race had two great horses.
HTB PICKS:
1: Rachel Alexandra (8-5)
This filly proved to be an excellent horse and Calvin Borel rode her to victory. When she got a good break out of the 13th position and got to the front I knew this race was over. She is just that good!
2. Papa Clem (12-1)
Oh boy did I mess up again. I don’t know what to say about Papa Clem. He was in the front half of the field most of the race and down the back stretch he pulled inside the top four but had little to show heading into the final turn. Papa Clem could have done better but 6th isn’t horrible and the Belmont is now in question.
3. Friesan Fire (6-1)
As I predicted this horse did back fire on me, so much for those “gut feelings”. Frisean Fire did not have a clean start but recovered well enough by the first turn to make a race of things. After the final turn he had nothing to show and finished 10th. This horse may skip the Belmont as well.
4. General Quarters (Odds 20-1)
GQ had a good ride until he was forced outside 3-4 wide into the final turn. I thought the longer the distance the better this horse would do, I guess I was wrong. This horse and owner is still a good story though and in the future I will not let my heart influence a money bet!
ACTUAL RESULTS-
WIN- Rachel Alexandra: Looks like Calvin Borel made the right call in changing mounts.
PLACE- Mine That Bird: Mike Smith did a great job as Mine That Bird went from back of the pack to the front in a flash
SHOW- Musket Man : This horse is very consistent and will be a contender if he contests the Belmont
4th- Flying Private: A very solid run for a horse who passed over the Derby to focus on the Preakness.
